sound is driving me insane

eh up, hows it going?

I dont post on here often but have been looking through past posts trying to find info on pick up systems and such. A lot of very useful info from you guys.
My main question is about the k&k systems. I remember reading somewhere that the k&k pure western mini (the one with just three contact pickups) could very easily pick up percussion on the body. I just wanted this to be clarified because I just cant see how it could pick up the percussion - k&k do the trinity system as well with a mic and that, for me, would be the one to go for if i wanted it to pick up percussion (its also more expensive) But if the pure western mini is as good as ive read for picking up percussion, then maybe i should go for that? If anyone could give me advice on this I would be very grateful.

I want a new guitar as well, possibly an avalon as i cant afford a lowden. My current guitar (breedlove performance series fusion thingy majig) is really great. It has a lr baggs dual source system installed and it does sound great through my aer (i do need some sort of pre amp though possibly tonebone?) GOD DAMN SO MANY QUESTIONS!!! But anyway theres just something about the sound thats not right. when the mic is blended in for percussive sounds it gets incredibly bassy. I dont really have a clue what im saying really.
My other guitar (faith saturn) is an insane guitar for the price however the seymour duncan magmic ive had installed is troubling me as well. Very tinny sound.

I really dont know what to do. Its all very confusing and expensive.

If anyone can make any sense of what ive just written and what exactly im asking, please any advice will be brill.

Cheers ,

Jack

RE: sound is driving me insane

I have the K&K Pure Western in two guitars. It can indeed pick up body sounds because the 3 transducers sense the top of the guitar moving to determine the sound. You can hit the body of the guitar and get a nice "thump" and you can tap the bridge for a nice "snap".

Having said that, you definitely won't get as good of a sound as you would with a system with an internal mic (like the other K&K you mentioned).

It might be possible to just have the K&K Pure Western installed by itself...if that works for you, then you're done. It might be possible to add the microphone later (you'd want to talk to an authorized luthier or just call K&K to make sure). Then you could just spend the ~$100 for the K&K and stop there if it's enough. That might be a little bit less risk.

Hope that helped a bit...

Gnome is right - You'll get plenty of percussion out of the K&K Pure systems. I have a passive Pure Western (3 contact) and Pure Classical (4 smaller contacts) on my Lowden and Schwartz respectively, and use an outboard preamp.

But with pickups, it all depends on the sound you are looking to achieve. The K&K provides a very natural acoustic sound. On my next guitar (in pre-build phase at the moment), I'm thinking about using a magnetic/mic combo. I really miss my old Sunrise magnetic pickups...
